The argument is that philosophy teaches the processes of calm and rational thought and it is those processes that assist in not merely surviving but making some kind of a life that is worth having amid a zombie apocalypse.
EDIT: But I agree with you about the killing-as-argument. I still don't get that. Though that said, it would be nice to able to treat killing irritating and ungrateful survivors as some kind of moral imperative.
