But DT's argument is that people in Malton don't have better shit to do. That your conception of it being elitist follows from a heirarchy of needs in which only the elite at the top have the time for philosophy.
In Malton, he would argue, there is no heirarchy of needs, only a web, and that people should see to both philosophy and survival or else fall into the mindless existence of a zombie.
Thus creating a false dichotomy between reading Descartes and being mindless.
